Do I need a fishing license for a charter in Flamingo?

Yes. Every angler fishing from a boat in Costa Rica is required to have a valid fishing license issued by INCOPESCA. The license costs $15 USD and can be purchased online before your trip at incopesca.go.cr. A confirmation email on your phone is accepted as proof of purchase on board — no need to print anything. Your captain can walk you through the process if needed.

What is the best time of year to go fishing in Flamingo, Costa Rica?

Flamingo produces world-class fishing every month of the year, but the best time depends on what you want to catch. December through April is peak dry season — relatively calm seas most days, clear water, a little windy, and the best Sailfish action of the year. May through October is prime for Mahi-Mahi, Marlin, and large Yellowfin Tuna offshore, while Roosterfish and Snapper are active inshore year-round. If you want the best conditions and the biggest variety, December through April is hard to beat.

What is the difference between the inshore and offshore fishing charters?

Inshore charters fish the bays, reef systems, and rocky points within 5–10 km of Flamingo Marina, targeting Roosterfish, Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Mackerel, and smaller Tuna. The water is calmer, the trips are shorter, and action is almost constant — perfect for families and beginners. Offshore charters run 15–20 km out to the deep Pacific feeding grounds where you'll target Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and large Yellowfin Tuna. Offshore trips are longer, cover more open water, and are designed for anglers chasing trophy big-game fish.

Are all your fishing charters private?

Yes. Every fishing charter we operate out of Flamingo Marina is 100% private — your group only. You will never be asked to share a boat with strangers. This means your captain can customize the trip around your group's experience level, target species, and pace. Whether there are 2 of you or a full boat of 8, you have the entire vessel, captain, and crew to yourselves for the duration of the trip.

Can we keep the fish we catch on a Flamingo fishing charter?

Yes, with a few exceptions. Roosterfish are strictly catch-and-release in Costa Rica — they are a protected species and cannot be kept regardless of size. Sailfish and Marlin are also traditionally released, and many of our captains strongly encourage it for conservation. All other species — Snapper, Grouper, Jacks, Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Mackerel — can be kept. Our crew will clean and fillet your catch at the end of the trip. Many restaurants in Flamingo and Potrero will happily cook your fresh catch for dinner.

How far in advance should I book a Flamingo fishing charter?

During peak season from December through April, our most popular boats — especially the Bushwacker, Fish Tale II, and WetAss 2 — book out 3 to 6 weeks in advance. We strongly recommend booking as early as possible if you are traveling during this window. In the green season from May through November, you can often book within a few days, but earlier is always better to guarantee your preferred boat, date, and departure time.
