Most visitors do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and most European Union countries can enter visa-free. US and Canadian travelers receive a tourist entry stamp allowing stays of up to 180 days. You will need a valid passport, a return travel ticket, and proof of sufficient funds. Your passport must have a minimum of 6 months validity remaining when entering. If traveling with children under 18 not accompanied by both parents, a notarized consent letter from the absent parent is recommended. We always recommend confirming current entry requirements with your airline or the Costa Rican consulate before travel.
It depends on what kind of vacation you are looking for — but for families, couples, and anyone seeking a relaxed, upscale beach experience, Playa Flamingo and Potrero are hard to beat. Flamingo offers a quieter atmosphere with a stunning white sand beach, the brand new Flamingo Marina, world-class sportfishing, and easy access to Playa Conchal, Playa Potrero, and Playa Brasilito. Tamarindo is busier, better for nightlife and surfing, but many travelers find it crowded and more commercialized. The two areas are only about 20–25 minutes apart by car, so staying in Flamingo doesn't mean missing out on Tamarindo.
A car is helpful but not essential, especially if you are booking tours with Wet and Wild. All of our full day tours include complimentary hotel transportation. For getting around locally, our Playa Flamingo golf cart rentals are a fun and popular way to explore the area. Scooter rentals and local taxis are also great options. If you plan to explore beyond the Flamingo area independently, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended, particularly during the green season.
Top activities in the Flamingo and Potrero area include sportfishing charters, snorkeling at the Catalinas Islands, ATV tours through jungle trails and coastal beaches, catamaran sunset cruises, Potrero zip-lining, horseback riding, scuba diving, and wildlife tours. The area offers easy access to both the Pacific Ocean and Costa Rica's tropical dry forest.
Playa Flamingo sits at the heart of Costa Rica's Gold Coast. Nearby beaches include Playa Potrero, Playa Brasilito, Playa Conchal, Playa Grande, Playa Penca, Playa Prieta, Playa Sugar, and Playa Matapalo — all within a short drive and accessible on our ATV and beach-hopping tours. Tamarindo and Playa Del Coco are approximately 30 minutes away.
Yes, transportation is included from most hotels and rentals in Playa Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Playa Brasilito, Playa Grande, and the RIU Guanacaste and RIU Palace Hotels. Groups of 8 or more receive free transportation from all locations listed above for our full day tours. Half day tours may carry an extra transportation cost for distant areas.

Costa Rica is considered one of the top sport fishing destinations in the world. The Pacific coast, and specifically the waters off Playa Flamingo and Playa Potrero, offers world-class sportfishing charters thanks to the nutrient-rich currents, underwater rock structures, and proximity to the deep sea. Anglers come from around the globe to fish these waters.
The waters off Flamingo and Potrero are home to an impressive variety of species. Our Flamingo fishing charters offer inshore targets like roosterfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, snapper, snook, grouper, and jack crevalle. Offshore, you can target yellowfin tuna, sailfish, striped marlin, blue marlin, and black marlin. Both inshore and offshore fishing are available year-round.
Fishing is excellent year-round out of Flamingo Marina. Peak seasons by species: roosterfish are caught year-round (avoid October); mahi-mahi peak from May–October; sailfish are most abundant May–August; marlin peak December–April; wahoo are most active August–September; and yellowfin tuna are available offshore year-round. See our fishing charter page for full trip details and pricing.
Inshore fishing takes place 1–5 miles offshore and targets species like roosterfish, mahi-mahi, snook, snapper, and wahoo around the Catalinas Islands, Bat Islands, and rocky reefs. Offshore deep-sea fishing ventures 15–25+ miles out to target billfish like sailfish and marlin. Our deep sea fishing charters from Playa Potrero offer both options depending on your goals and budget.
Inshore trips typically stay within 1–15 miles of the coast, while offshore fishing excursions can range from 20–40+ miles depending on species targets and ocean conditions. Our captains have decades of local knowledge and know exactly where the fish are running.
Yes, a Costa Rican fishing license is required for all anglers. You can apply for your Costa Rica fishing license online through the official INCOPESCA website before your trip. Our team will guide you through the process and confirm everything is in order before departure.
Fishing conditions and hot species change throughout the year. Common year-round catches include roosterfish, snapper, and yellowfin tuna. Contact Wet and Wild directly for the latest fishing report and current conditions off the Flamingo and Potrero coast.

Yes, the Costa Rica departure tax at Liberia Airport (LIR) and San José International Airport (SJO) is $29 USD per person. Most major airlines now include this fee automatically in the price of your ticket — including American Airlines, Delta, United, Air Canada, WestJet, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, Alaska Airlines, Copa Airlines, Avianca, Air France, KLM, and Iberia. To confirm whether your ticket includes it, check the taxes and fees breakdown on your booking for terms like "boarding tax," "departure tax," or code "B1." Payments can also be made at the departure tax counter at LIR before check-in, payable in USD, Costa Rican colones, or by Visa debit or credit card. We recommend confirming the current amount with your airline before travel as fees are subject to change.
